The Las Salinas Natural Park extends from the salt pans in the south of Ibiza, near the small town of San Francesc de S’Estany, in the municipality of Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, to the salt pans of Formentera, in the north of the island.
It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001 and has a total area of 15,400 hectares, of which 13,000 are marine surface.
It includes within its boundaries the chain of islets that are located between both islands and that form the well-known Es Freus, the island of Espardell and the beautiful Espalmador, as well as the beaches of Las Salinas or Es Cavallet in Ibiza, or Illetas in Formentera, whose crystal-clear waters, thanks to the cleansing action of posidonia, return an intense turquoise colour under the sun.
The park also offers cliff landscapes, such as Cap des Falcó, dune systems on both islands, and the salt pans, built by the Phoenicians in their first settlements on the islands and later continued to be used and improved by the Romans and Arabs.
The most important fauna is the more than 200 species of birds that nest in the park or visit it to make a stop on their migratory journey. The most important and colorful species are the flamingos and herons that can be seen in the salt pans.
As for the park’s flora, the junipers stand out, with their trunks twisted and knocked over by the wind, the pine forests and the famous posidonia.
